Songwriters and composers, are you intrigued but a little unsure about what you will be signing up for at The Melbourne Sessions? Well, we’ve got a list for you!
The Melbourne Sessions is a full day of programming for emerging and mid-career songwriters and composers who want to dig a bit deeper artistically, further develop their skills, and make some new contacts along the way.
1. Your schedule will be packed. There is knowledge to gain. And, yes there will be tea breaks.
Here’s how the day will roll:
Arrival and Opening Announcements 9AM
Keynote In Conversation with a top international songwriter/producer – all attendees.
A panel on the business of music – all attendees.
Masterclass, approx. 75 minutes.
Lunch. Eat and meet.
Workshops, approx. 3 hours with a TEA BREAK.
Performance and networking sessions – socialise and talk shop from 5pm – 6pm.
2. This is the second time around for The Melbourne Sessions.
APRA AMCOS and Creative Victoria launched the initiative together last year and it SOLD OUT, hence we want to keep doing it. Write, compose, create, connect is our mantra.
3. Collaboration is super, super important in the music biz.
We’ve run some numbers and it turns out most hit songs are the result of teamwork.
++ 2016 year-end Top 100 Singles – a Music Week study found it takes an average of 4.53 songwriters to create a global hit single.
++ 2016 year-end ARIA Top 50 Australian Artist Singles only six were composed by a sole writer (and Vance Joy claims two of those).
++ 2017 year end ARIA Top 50 Australian Artist Singles only five songs were composed by a sole writer (only 3 writers total: Amy Shark, Tash Sultana and Vance Joy with three of those)
++ 2018 year end ARIA Top 50 Australian Artist Singles only 3 songs were composed by a sole writer; on average there were just over 3 songwriters per song; 29 of the chart entries had at least one international songwriter.
4. Meeting people is easy. No, not really.
It turns out not many managers, record labels, music publishers or film producers advertise songwriting/composing jobs on Seek. So, you gotta put yourself out there and find others to work with or who might help you along your career path. Come and meet these people on 5 July.
5. Masterclass (in a nutshell)
An interactive conversation between the leader, a facilitator and the attendees. Get advice and insight on techniques, process, inspiration and more.
6. Workshop (in a nutshell)
Small , genre-focused group where you get to discuss and work on song and composing craft with a total pro. And yes, you are encouraged to bring your own instrument or equipment.
7. Get your tickets! Join APRA AMCOS.
The Melbourne Sessions is a ticketed event, with space for a couple hundred attendees. Our 2018 event SOLD OUT, so don’t delay in purchasing your ticket to this year’s event! And if you aren’t an APRA AMCOS member – here is how you can join.
8. More to be revealed…sign-up for the newsletter.
We’ll be announcing an international heavyweight, all the masterclass speakers, as well as additional workshop artists.
